Girls 2008

These paintings focus on the strength and vulnerability of young girls.
On the cusp of adolescence, they are caught between the comfort of
childhood and the anticipation of being “grown up.” Their bodies are
changing, attracting new kinds of attention.  They become women on
the outside and yet remain, in many ways, child-like.

Beneath the placid prettiness of the girls’ faces is a storm of splattered
paint, which mirror the layers of emotion, the anticipation of new
experiences and the possibility of past experiences a viewer would not
expect of someone so young. There is so much happening in the mind
and body of a girl on the cusp of adulthood. This fragile, tumultuous
time in a woman’s life is the foundation of my work.
